What Will You Learn?

We are very happy to announce the next installment of our groundbreaking instructional series, where coach John Danaher show you how to Go Further Faster in your search for mastery of BJJ fundamentals.

This series explains one of the most important skills in all of jiu-jitsu: retaining your guard against an opponent intent on passing and pinning you down

The Go Further Faster series, like the Enter The System series of instructional releases, operates with a very important goal: to identify and explain the foundational skills, movements, and concepts that every jiu-jitsu practitioner needs to reach their full potential. One of the keys among them must be how to retain your guard, even when your opponent is putting you under incredible pressure and stress.

Guard retention, at its core, is so key to success in jiu-jitsu. We all know the guard is one of BJJ’s most important tools, and keeping an active threat at all times from your back is foundational to your success. So, then, keeping your guard must be one of the fundamental tools that you have. The better your guard retention, the better your jiu-jitsu, simple as that. Now, with this series, you can explore this concept in depth, benefiting from John’s years of study.

Learn and master the movements, techniques, strategies, and concepts necessary to retain guard against even far more experienced grapplers, by breaking down those important skills to focus on, and understanding what makes them so key.

By combining these moves and movements, anyone will be able to keep the guard while attacking and defending from their back.

For this fundamentals course, we will focus on leveling up the following areas:

- Movement skills: You cannot perform MOVES well without the prerequisite MOVEMENT skills that make them possible

- Technical skills: These must be taught at a level of sophistication that will speed progress and sustain growth all the way to black belt and beyond.

- Conceptual knowledge: Only when a student is given the big picture provided by a clear statement of the underlying concepts beneath the many moves being taught can he or she put the moves of the sport in a context that enables them to be used effectively on the mat.

3 Positions Of Guard Retention In Jiu Jitsu

This series will focus on three major positions from where we must fight to retain the guard. By combining all three, you can gain a much fuller understanding of the heuristic system that the Danaher athletes use at the highest levels of competition. Those positions:

Seated Guard: Learn how to move from a seated position when under danger, using wedges, hip escapes, heists, and rolls to create space and get back to a comfortable guard.

Supine Guard: When laying down, see the important details behind what can make your guard a nightmare to pass, including the little details behind weaving your legs in that everyone gets wrong, and the right ways to position your arms and legs to get back.

Turtle Position: A good guard retention must include the turtle position, so find out exactly when to go to the turtle, what to do once you are there, and how to dynamically combine this into your game for seamless reguarding.

By combining all three positions in the right way, you can unlock their full potential for offense and defense. Work the smart way, not the hard way, and anyone of any skill level can learn the proper approach from one of the world’s best coaches.
